Some think of purely sensory pleasure as being a species of aesthetic pleasure. But, for others, aesthetic pleasure, by contrast, involves variety in its intentional object, pleasure being taken in the manner in which the various aspects are related to one another or in a property generated by the character of the aspects and the relations among them (so that the experience of a ‘well-balanced’ wine qualifies, not as purely sensory, but as aesthetic). Accordingly, it is not just that the intentional object of aesthetic pleasure must be complex: the pleasure must be due to the way in which the elements relate to one another.

Furthermore, even if each inherent aesthetic merit-constituting property did have a certain positive weight and each inherent defectconstituting property a certain negative weight, it would not follow that an item’s aesthetic value is determined by the sum of the weights of the totality of its properties of these two kinds. For—leaving aside both the questionable idea of the totality of an item’s merit- and defect-constituting properties and the fact that such properties can be of higher- and lowerorders—in the case of works of art (but not, I believe, natural objects) the presence of an inherent aesthetic merit-constituting property in an item is not necessarily an aesthetic virtue of that item: a property that is, in itself, an aesthetic merit, is not necessarily a property that always, in every item, makes a positive contribution to the item’s aesthetic value.
