Example text

The sedimentary basins occupy the lower ground between the mountain ranges. To the north the Sorbas Basin is in front of you, the Tabernas Basin to the left (west) and the Vera Basin far to the right (east). The Almería Basin is to the south. The pale, marly, Tortonian rocks outcrop along the southern margins of the Sorbas and Tabernas basins, exposed along the west–east orientated valley of the Rambla de Lucainena to your west and the similar strike valley of the Rambla de Mizala to your east.

The Alborán Basin is underlain by relatively thin continental crust and an anomalously low-velocity upper mantle. Models include extensional collapse of thickened continental lithosphere (Platt & Vissers, 1989) and radial nappe spreading from a mantle diapir in the Alborán Sea (Weijermars, 1985). 2. Following emplacement of the nappes, interaction between the African and Iberian plates then became dominated by strike-slip and extensional fault movement. The extensional tectonics (Middle Miocene–Tortonian) are thought to be related to the formation of the Alborán Sea (Comas et al.

1), into the Almería Basin. This course was originally superimposed from the retreating end-Cariatiz Formation sea, and became antecedent with uplift of the Alhamilla–Cabrera axis. This zone is visible c. 10 km to the east, as a low in the Sierra Alhamilla ridge. Another original transverse drainage was the Lucainena–Alias system, which crossed the Sierra Alhamilla just to the south of Cantona. The modern canyon is visible c. 3 km to your south, beyond the fault zone. 2). This area is visible as the eroded badland area c.
