But while Zachary Taylor's bloody though indecisive victories secured for him the White House, Scott's political ambitions were frustrated when he was decisively defeated by Franklin Pierce in 1852, though by way of consolation he was made a lieutenant general by brevet in 1855, the only man in American history to hold that rank.
